We went to Penang with my parents, in laws, and hubby’s Godmum during this June holidays. This is the first time we travelled together! We travelled by Jetstar, which costs about $1154 for all the 9 of us, so each person is about $128, which is relatively cheap. The flight took only an hour plus. We stayed at Penang Jen Hotel in George Town and the 3 nights stay costs about $1400+ for 3 rooms, which is inclusive of daily breakfasts and chauffer drive of 4 hours for one day. We booked an additional 4 hours drive for about $200 plus. Because we are travelling with the seniors, so we planned just 4 hours of City visit each day, and after that, we went back hotel to rest.
We had actually went Penang before, but it was a short trip last time in year 2011. http://ido.sg/theincredibles/2011/12/penang-trip-3-5-december/
On day 1, when we reach Penang, it was already about night time, so we just checked in hotel and rest. Hubby took in laws and Godmum to nearby to eat durians, since Penang durians are rather famous.
On day 2, we visited the Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si. Both places are located on top of hills, so we had to take trams and incline lift, which wasted a bit of time. So by the time we had visited the places, we had not much time left. The chauffer brought us to buy some coffee and local products after that. For Penang Hill, it was an interesting experience take the funicular train to reach the summit of the hill, but we didn’t find the place very interesting. There was nothing much to see. Kek Lok Si is one of the largest and most beautiful temple, with a huge bronze Guan Yin Statue on top of the hill. It was also an interesting experience taking the inclined lift up the hill.
On day 3, we went to Pinang Penarakan Museum, Interactive Museum, Reclining Buddha and Chew Jetty. We also visited some of the street art. There was a short guided tour at Pinang Penarakan Museum, we saw the different costumes worn by the Penarakans, as well as the exquisite furniture and Dinnerware used by them. It is a showcase or a museum of the legacy of Penang’s Baba and Nyonya. The reclining Buddha temple is a big temple, with big Buddha statue lying sideway. This temple is a Thai temple and it is well known due to the gold plated reclining Buddha that is as long as 33meters. This made it one of the largest available in the whole wide world. Chew Jetty is a village built on stilts and these were built by some pioneer Chinese immigrants. Each jetty comprises of row houses on stilts joined by wooden walkways over the water. There were many shops along the wooden walkways selling mainly local products and souvenirs. We also visited some of the street art, but they are not easy to find, as they are drawn at different places. You need to walk around the area to find the wall pieces, and because we had seniors with us, so we could not really walk too much. Finally, we went to Made in Penang Interactive Museum. We had a good time taking photos with the 3D wall art that ranges from food to culture and attractions in Penang. In the night, we went to walk along Penang road to try it’s famous chendol, and to take a look at the things selling in the shops.
On day 4, me and hubby’s Godmum were sick, so we just took a walk at Prangin mall and 1st Avenue mall next door, and rested in the hotel room. Luckily, the hotel was kind enough to extend our two rooms to 4pm checkout timing, and after that, when we told them our members were sick, they kindly agreed to let us keep one room till 6pm. At about 6pm plus, we took the transfer to airport, and took 9.25pm flight back to Singapore. I was running a temperature, and was so afraid that I would be stopped by the temperature check due to Mers disease going around in South Korea. Luckily, they didn’t conduct temperature check on us. That ended our 4 days 3 nights memorable short trip.
